Suspected Codec Problem

I downloaded a video to my desktop and couldn't get it to play, just got a black screen with no audio or video. I checked the codecs using GSpot and it said all codecs for the file were installed (Xvid for video). I then put the video on a flash drive and brought it to my laptop to find that it worked perfectly. I need it on my desktop because I need to burn it to a CD and my laptop doesn't have a burner... Any idea what's wrong?

Do you recall installing any codec pack?

Since it's an .avi, do you have the VLC player? If not, an install of the VLC player might be able to play it. If not, you might need a codec such as the K-lite pack.
