Swapping ATi to Nvidia??

Hey everyone, I just ordered a GTX260 which will hopefully arrive next week. Before it arrives I just wanted to ask a few questions about installing it.

At the moment I have an HD3850 and I was wondering if its necessary to reformat my hard drive before installing the new card. I dont want anything clashing and causing my new card to not work properly.

I read a good tutorial on another forum where the guy said its possible to just use Driver Cleaner when changing between ATi and Nvidia but there was also the possibility that the new cards performance could be affected if a reformat isnt done. Other people had commented saying they had no problem just using Driver Cleaner.

I was just wondering what your opinion is on this and has anyone done a similar swap before and did you have problems?

Thanks in advance, Michael.

uninstalling the driver, then turning off the pc, and inserting the new card so far always worked for me. (even when switching between 2 brands) I dont see a problem there really. just make sure the driver etc are removed before you switch cards. :)

Thanks for the reply :)

Anyone else got anything to add?

Well i installed my 4670, all i did was
1. uninstall my nvidia drivers
2. Switch my 8400GS to 4670
3. Install ati drivers
4. then restart the computer.

Thats it, i didn't have to do any cleaner, or anything, its run like a champ, no problems, so i wouldn't do all that cleaning, and stuff when all you have to do is uninstall and install.

i'd suggest you use a driver cleaner to clean out the old driver to prevent conflicts with the new driver.

Yeah thats what i was planning on doing. Iv got one called Driver Cleaner Pro which is supposed to be good.

When I was a total noob I did the same thing with no issues.

Had a old Radeon card and didn't remove drives and install my 7600GT. No GPU = Drives don't load for ATI so no issues.

Still I would remove the driver and delete the folder then run a cleaning tool to get rid of the spare files.

I never uninstall any of the drivers when I get new hardware. I just plug them in and call it good. However, if you plug it in and find that there is a conflict (ie. something run slow, etc) then go and delete the old driver. ANd if that doesn't work, THEN format and reinstall. There's no point in doing it unless you know you actually have to.
