Swapping Motherboards Require Reinstall of OS and Software?

I know changing motherboards usually requires a reinstall of the OS and software, but I hear that it doesn't always.

I purchased a computer that came with the ASUS P5B-VM. It was supposed to have the P5K-VM. They are going to send it to me. Will it be possible that I won't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling the OS and software?
 
It may.

Try using the new board with the current OS install and see if it works out.. if it doesn't, you'll most likely get a BSOD and the PC will reboot.. at which point it's time to re-install Windows :)
 
Last night I got bored and for fun tried to stick my ATA drive w/ Vista Ultimate and XP Home SP2 in my new PC.. needless to say it came from an Intel mobo, and I was putting it in an nvidia AMD mobo.. it didn't work, of course.

However, being as your boards are so similar, I believe it'll work.. but I could be wrong.
 
When you get the mobo try to boot the HDD in safe mode and install most of the main drivers there, then boot to the normal mode and finish the rest of the drivers.
 
One of the main reasons it will probably not work is because of the different chipsets.

You might get lucky, but even it it does work, I'm betting you will have problems down the line.

If it was me, I would reformat. Nothing worse than getting into a 100 page document and having your system blue screen, loosing everything you did.

Try what it tells you on the following link. It might work for you. It is a bit dated, but still valid.

Thanks for the helpful article. Looks promising.

Someone also mentioned booting to the Vista DVD and running the repair install. Sounds like it's worth a try.
