Stupid question maybe but I'm running 6gb of ram in tri channel mode 3x2gb ocz pc3 12800. I think it runs at 1.65v. Can I just buy 3 modules of 4GB of the same speed. Swap old for new and retain tri channel even if it's not specified to be? Like 3x 4GB crucial pc3 12800? 1.5v . Mobo is evga x58 ftw3 thanks

It's better to buy a triple channel kit even if you buy 3 sticks of the same stuff. Triple channel kit is guaranteed to work together. Just make sure you get same speed, voltage and timings.

Channeling is a function of the controller and not the DIMMs themselves.

I'd try combining kits and testing for stability since you'll have that entire/full upgrade as opposed to removing the old quantity too.

As stated though, you can usually have a better match of capabilities in sticks from the same batch or within the same kit.

So what your saying is if I get 3 individual sticks of 4 and they are the same batch voltage and timings etc it should be fine? Thanks
