Switch instead of router?

Hi everybody! I have a question about switches that I have been wondering for a while but cant understand the technical answers that I have read so far.

Basically I need to hook up 2 pcs to the internet and dont want to loose speed by having to go through a router. I have tried opening ports but cant get a static IP to work due to the ISP reps not being able to speak english.

I was wondering if a switch would accomplish this? Thanks in advance.

we use hubs and switchs to connect to the internet at work. we also use routers. routers have features built in. while switch is just a switch. it does not need any software to install. just plug and play.

we have a lot of switches at work because we have more computers than ethernet wall jacks available. switches cost less than routers most of the time.

a router just takes your internet, and handles assigning each computer an ip address

a switch just takes one ethernet cable and splits into as many as you need, and a hub is just a cheaper version of a switch, where all of the individual connections share a total bandwidth, rather than each having full speed capability

The Heirarchy of Networking Devices:
Router: Connects to the internet, efficiently splits to many signals, Networking... "The King"
Switch: Provides splitter to each specific computer(sends to a specific destination, not to all PC's), networking.. "The Queen"
Hub: Provides splitting to all computers. Send same signal to all connected pcs, doesnt matter which pcs actually uses it. This floods and slows the network when more than 2 pcs are connected. It is the poor mans splitter(which doesnt make sense anymore as they are only about 2 more expensive than a switch). "The peasent"

a switch is basicly an 'inteligent' hub, it doesnt slow the network down, but it still can only be used in 1 network. a router is used to connect 2 networks together (aka, the internet, and your home network)
so no, you cant place a switch instead of a hub. (thats about as easy as I can explain it :) )

you want your 2 pcs in your home to connect to the internet right? if that's the case, you need a broadband router. hub or switch do you no good, because you want both pc connect to the internet with 1 static IP. This is the easiest way Ithink
