I have a computer that is compatible for both 2100 and 2700 DDR. There is currently 2700 in there, but it is only 128 mb. I have access to 512 mb of 2100. If I swap these out will I need to change any bios settings because of the changed speeds?
Not likely! Even though the PC2100 266mhz memory is slower the increase from 128mb upto 512mb will still make a noticable difference provided it is the type that will run on that make and model board. Some older baords only run single sided dimms while others will accept both types and then only run dual sided.
What make and model is the board there? A look over of the board's specifications will show what is supported.
nForce 4 will run double or single sided, if the 128 is one stick and the 512 is one stick but them both in, it will just down clock the 2700 to 2100 and you will have 640 mbs. If it runs stable leave them in.
When mixing diffferent speeds the often seen recommendation is installing the fater memory into the first slot. But the thing you might also want to consider is buying new PC2700 memory to see upto 1gb with a pairs of 512s. That would be a giant leap in overall system performance and stabily if you are planning to continue running the system and not upgrading any time soon.
