Symptoms of a faulty hard drive

Hi my laptop is starting to crash sometimes after 10 minutes or it could be a couple of hours.I think its my hard drive but before going out to buy one i would like to know for definate it is the hard drive.Is there any obvious symptons that would tell me it is.Thanks Chris.

well is it even getting past the BIOS screen and loading your OS?

yes its loading xp ok, but it just seems sluggish and not very stable

can be other factors as well...

but the first thing u can check for if its infected by spyware/malware/viruses/torjans.. if you have any antivirus/antispyware... run those through and do a detection..

I'm having a problem with my laptop HD. The OS did not load, so I tried reinstalling XP. I get to the part where it has to format the HD. After about 2 hours, it gets to 100% and the computer stops responding. Very strange.

i have run my anti virus software, came back clear, its working ok now but it may go of at any given moment, and there is a strange grinding noise coming from it
