System BIOS, new PC

I figure I got the BIOS screen working , so the computer is working, first build. Is there anything I should be adjusting in the system BIOS or do I leave it as is for now,and proceed with the windows 7 install? Thanks
 
If your BIOS is detecting the hard drive I would just go through with the Windows 7 installation. It sounds like everything is working properly.

Did you just build a system with a Phenom II 955 processor?
 
The only thing you might have to adjust is the RAM speed, if you got anything faster than 1333. In that case, it will usually default the RAM to 1333MHz @ 9-9-9 @ 1.5V no matter what its actual specs are. The machine will still function just fine like that, though.
 
otherwise, if you wish it to boot a bit faster, most bios's have an option to skip ram checking, and you can generally set all your drives manually so that the bios doesnt have to find them at boot every time.

theres also usually an option to control the fan speed depending on the cpu's heat. it should be turned off, because then your fan runs flat out, all the time, but keeps your cpu temp down

also, after installing windows, change the boot priority so that it boots the hard drive first

anything you are unsure about, or dont understand, i wouldnt change at all, and if everything goes wrong with any settings, there will be a clear cmos jumper on the motherboard, or just remove the battery for a few minutes with power d/c
 
I got a screen that says

Reboot or select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key


What to do, I guess no boot device is detected?
 
The Phenom II 955 is good choice for a processor. You won't regret your choice in my opinon. (I own a Phenom II 940 Quad-Core Processor.) Did you change the startup priority in your BIOS? Set the DVD drive as the first startup device.
 
Boot settings are
1st boot device [sata:4s-sr3500418A]
2nd boot device [cd/dvd:pm-asusdrw]

Should I switch these around?

Is there like a basic BIOS set up that I should follow?

Make the optical the 1st boot device, put the disk in and restart. It will then start the install for the dissk.
If it asks to insert disk to boot from disk, you can do that too.
I personally wouldn't try to customize any bios settings right now(just the boot order).
After the install Windows will will run(with the disk still in), and when you power it back up from there, just go to the bios and set the hdd as 1st and optical as second.
I think getting a temp monitor prog on there right away is a good idea to have running on the desktop.

Thanks , I think I am over thinking the start up, and confusing myself. I am going to change the boot order of the 2 items and go from there like you say.
During the BIOS screen , there is a area that shows the fan speed and the temp of the MB and the CPU, is this what you mean or do I need another temp probe?

ok, if it doesnt go to optical straight up, just disable the hdd in boot order(or you can just do that anyways), then just rearange it after windows is up and running.
anther app that you can have up on the desktop and see it while windows is running. try Speedfan.
 
Just let it load the files and it may take a bit,,just wait for the 'select language' screen, go along the steps a bit and it will want to know where you want to install windows. Your hdd will be listed there. Format it, and select the amount(in megabytes-not gb,(do the math))of the hdd you want to be c:,,then select that space(it wont have a c on it yet)as the install location. The go along the rest of the steps and it will reboot on its own a couple times or so, when the dsktop appears, it'll be done. You can then go back to the bios and set the hdd as 1st boot,,,then use the mb disk to install drivers, apps,,and other driver you have for periferals.
 
oK, I put the windows CD in and its working. I had been trying to install the dvd driver cd and it would not take. Its going with the windows cd.
