System Freezes at Startup

Good morning,
Here's the current situation with my system.
I boot the computer normally - I get to the first screen for windows (XP SP2)(the black one with the logo and the progress bar), and then it freezes.
I restart a few times - no luck
I try again in Safe Mode - it start loading the drivers - and freezes.
So I try to reinstall Windows - it recognizes the cd, starts copying the necessary files to start the installation program, just as it's about to get to the first menu of the installation (it says, 'Now starting Windows), it freezes.

It seems that my computer and windows are not too happy with each other. Every time it starting Windows, whether it's normally, in safe mode or in the installation, it freezes.

The system temp is 27 degress, the CPU fan is running at 3125 RPM and the System fan at 3183 RMP, so I don't think it's an overheating problem.

(update: I just popped in the Acronis True Image disk to reinstall the image, and now it's freezing moments after starting the program)

Could this be a RAM problem, or some other hardware malfunction that is causing the system to freeze?

Thanks for any advice.

It could be a RAM problem. Do you have another system that you could download memtest and burn to CD (or make a bootable floppy) to test the RAM?

If you don't you could try getting some new RAM but be sure you can return it if it's not the problem.

if your overclocking that might be the problem too, but less likely. i agree with cromewell. get memtest86 from microsoft and check it.

It's a custom building Frankenstein machine. I've tested the RAM using multiple passes of a memory tester. Is there another step I can take from here? If it's not the RAM, could there be some other conflict between the windows operating system starting up and the hardware which it is initialising?

Thanks

the same thing happened with my sony desktop, it used to randomly freeze then it started freezing like urs, 2 weeks ago it was freezing at the very first screen with the black screen with the sony logo and now my screen doesnt even show anything. I replaced the cpu and no luck im thinking its maybe the video card, ill buy one tommorow and see what happens when i put it in.

Try removing hardware components one-by-one, starting with the video card (swapping it out if you don't have integrated video). See if it starts up fine with a certain component disabled. It sounds to me like something's starting to die.

yeah, if its not a RAM problem its probably a hardware conflict.. start out with the main components : CPU, mobo, PSU, HDD, video card. no floppy... sound card and all the new components.. then if you get the compy working plug em in one by one...
