System freezes intermittently while gaming

All components are recent and the computer works perfectly with any other applications but while gaming (Borderlands, SCII or Dirt) it sometimes freezes for several seconds then goes back to normal. More rarely it also doesn't go back to normal and I can't do anything but restart it.
I assumed it's something to do with the GPU so I installed the latest drivers but the problem remains.

Any ideas what's wrong here ?
 
During game.

Actually the temps went up to 60°C after a few hours playing in a 30+°C room but it didn't freeze again so it's definitely not the problem.

Also "intermittently" was not the appropriate term since it usually only happens once in a gaming session.
