System Lock Up - Viruses Everywhere

My girlfriends computer is pretty messed up. It has serveral viruses, a driver problem, and the task bar has decided to go missing. I can't change or edit any files that includes cutting, copying, pasting, so I can't install anything.

It's a pentium 3, so scanning for viruses takes forever(yes I can still get the virus program up and running). I have found a few and deleted them but it takes a really long time to do.

I was thinking of taking the hard drive from her computer, putting it in mine as a slave drive and using all my software to clean her drive up.

Would this work?
If so, will any of her Windows XP files be harmed, because I have to be able to put it back in her computer and then just boot it up, without anything going wrong with the O/S.

Will my hard drive be at risk because there is a virus on hers?

Thanks any any advice is appreciated.

The infected drive itself won't spread any viruses by slaving it in another case. Any files copied from it could easily spread if they were infected. If the drive is too loaded with viruses, spywares, adwares, malwares, whatever then having an installation disk will come in handy since you will most likely have to wipe the drive to see a clean drive to reinstall Windows on to. If you simply reinstall Windows without cleaning all infected files off the drive, including anything hidden in the boot sector, you will only see this reappear later. If you are not familiar with manually locating and removing file and registry edits that require extreme care. Getting the drive clean and running in your friend's case is what you have to do unless you know that some files are clean and can be tranferred to your own. That's risky however.

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step 1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Corporation] servicer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Corporation] servicer.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Corporation] servicer.exe
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache...up1.0.0.15.cab

Now click fix selected and exit HijackThis.

Step 2

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

I've given up. After doing the Killbox thing, and rebooting the computer went back to being the same as it was when I started. The taskbar disappeared, it took forever to load and it just is stupid.

It's time to take it to an expert, if its even worth that.

Thanks for the help though.

Im sorry you feel this way. I was on the verge of getting your computer clean. If you would like me to continue with the fix i need the hijackThis file and the ewido scan.

If you quit after the ewido scan you need to reconsider, ewido was going to clean up alot.

Before abandoning the ship there is another option provided you have the installation disk there to work with. It simply is the "install to repair" method that repairs and replaces any corrupted or missing system files in order to get the system running normal again. The article here does have to be read through completely to see good results however. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
The advantage here is to repair Windows without wiping the drive. Once Windows is up and running you can blast the viruses off with a few different utilities. This method won't delete any files and folders other then any damaged system files being repaired with an overwrite. Any other files found infected you simply drag into the recycle bin before reinfecting the system a second time. This is the one method to save the current installation on a drive that is heavily polluted. But use more then one remover to clean up the rest of the drive in the meantime.

Well it's an old computer so I don't even want to be bothered with it anymore.

I'll wait until my girl gets back from her trip and then she can figure out what to do.
