System locked up after Windows Update

A few days ago I was watching the PC updating and everything was fine before the last update.
Now, all I get on the screen is an error message telling me to run chkdsk /F check for hard drive corruption.

I have tried to the limits of my brain to fiqure it out.

I have swapped HDs and even install a 3.5 disk to get the A: up but I still cannot get to the original HD.

The replacement HD came from a sister DELL Precision 390 PC. I picked up two matching system with same every thing installed, memory, HD size XP pro install.

BUT even with the matching HD the only prompt I get at startup is the same error message.

Problem has been detected and windows has been shut down.

Run CHKDSK /F

Even with the replacment HD the same error message appears.

Mainly what I want to save is the Legal Windows XP professional program. Neither system came with CDs or DVDs.

"Technical information:
STOP 0x0000007B, (0xf7a61524,0xc0000034, 0x000000000, 0x000000000)

I forgot to say,

I cannot get the CD prompt, the A: or C: access nothing but the error.

I ran the Dell Diag program that's builtin under the F12 option and the system took two hours to test everything, and I mean everything, The program found nothing wrong with the HD either,

If I had the XP pro CD, I cannot access the CD drive to run a new install.

I was hoping to save the OS and use the PC for security systems operations.

Were you playing around in the bios with the sata controller mode? Sata, IDE, AHCI, or raid... Or is it possible windows update installed driver updates and it went bad? If this is happening on both drives then I assume its a bios setting.

The second PC is fine and it's HD I tried in the error PC works fine back in the second PC.

What I didn't do was to try the error pc Hard drive in the second PC yet. I didn't jump on that in case the error might transfer from one to the other and loose both HDs with XP pro on both.

I use used PCs to turn them into security systems for Home and Businesses

The XP OS is perfect for PC/SS

I don't need every update form Windows but I try to keep all my systems up to date in case the new PC owners want to access remote viewing from work or from play.

I had the system sitting on a desk behind me, by itself, running, automatic updates on.

At restart the error message appeared.

What can i do, with out C: prompt, or even Access to the CD or D: prompt, the PC is useless to me. I've ran into all kinds of problems with system in the past, but I'm in the dark on this style error.
I have several XP OS disk from other failed systems that I've parted out, but with out access to the CD drive I can't reload a OS.

On startup, I have these options

Option safe mode

Option safe mode with command prompt

Option safe mode with networking

LAst known setup that worked

or start windows naomally.

No matter which option I choose I get the blue screen same option blue screen error message saying the system has been shut down to keep from damaging the PC

That's all

As I said before check the bios for the sata controller setting. If original drive works fine in the other computer then its a bios setting, just compare them. Most likely the sata ahci/ide setting.

Backwards, I tried another working and matching HD in the PC having problems and the PC still failed to start.

I haven't placed the HD from the failing PC into the other working PC yet.

How do you check or change the BIOS in the failing PC

When you turn the computer on, you should see on the screen where it says press such and such key to enter setup. That would be the bios.

What could a update change in the BIOS.

To me, as a novice, everything checks out ok. Every test of the system test OK except for OS, XP pro.

The setup in BIOS works fine, and tells me the CD drive is there, the 80 gig HD is there, everything needed is there.

the Bios seems to work and I just now reset everything to Factory Default, expecting some sort of improvement, but no.

After the F1 to continue, or the F2 to enter Setup at startup, I still get the blue screen telling me that the system has been shut down to keep from damaging the computer.

If I select F1 first I get the black screen with the different Windows startup options. Every option I chose goes to the blue screen errors.

If I select F2, I get a chance to make a setup change in Bios, but then it goes back to black screen with the Windows setup options, and again no matter which option I select, the blue error screen appears.

Bios sees the HD and the CD player, it sees the correct memory, etc.
Bios sees everything is there need to startup into windows but windows fails to start.

I've been reading everything I can about Bios settings, I pulled the Battery for 1 minute today, but still nothing starts but the error screen.

Unable to find to find a problem solver here I decided to remove the HD in the error filled PC and place it as #2 HD in it's sister pc that works fine.

The other system sees the HD from the error filled PC and is running test on it. So far chkdsk /f found NO problems.

I'm running scandisk on the now #2HD, it's taking a good while to scan.

If my problem is gone in the error PC's HD, I'll post the results.....

The HD from the error PC was CHKDSK'd, Scanned'd, and defragged and no problems were found. I placed the HD back in the error PC and the problem still exist with the blue screen of death.

With out any new ideas I may just part out the error PC case and add the memory so it will double and add the tested OK HD so the other PC system.

Any ideas that this novice can try...

It's getting hard to follow this now. So does bad drive work in pc #2? Does good drive from pc #2 work in pc #1? I'm guessing here that your windows update installed an updated sata driver which as caused this issue.

Try this. Use a XP install disc and go into recovery console. Then follow the guide here and do a system restore to before the update.

Start from resolution B.
