i have no idea what i did but i cant do many of the windows functions anymore... i cant search for a file or use ant of the system tools (defrag, system restore, dick clean up) nothing... anyone have a program or any way of fixing this??

It sounds like something hit one or more system files. If you have the Windows installation(for XP or earlier) you can run the system file checker with the installation disk in the cd/dvd drive by typing "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt and pressing the enter or clicking the ok button to start this going. This will repair or replace any of the essential system files found damaged or missing. If you recently installed any new programs and are now seeing this the system restore feature can also bring you back before the problems were first seen. To manually start that you go into the Windows F8 boot menu following the system post tests and choose the safe mode /command prompt only option to bring you to the prompt. Once there simply type in "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" without the quotes and press enter to see it started up without Windows running. For troubleshooting the system restore feature itself review the Microsoft article seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302796/

well... ive tried all of it and nothing seemed to work since i cant use system restore
any other ideas? or is my last option reformating?

welp... atleast i can say i tried,
i tried the XP repair but when it's suppose to say,
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

it just gives me a message saying a file is corrupted

Have you inspected the disk for nay finger prints, smudge marks, or scratches on the disk itself? When you boot up with the installation disk and see that type of error it sounds like the disk isn't being fully read. That loads up independently from any OS on the hard drive. If the disk is spotless the need for lens cleaning in the optical drive being might help if not simply rebooting with the disk after wiping it with a clean soft cloth.

You can check with different cd to see if cdrom will read it properly.
If yes most probably there is something wrong with your os cd.

Either something is now wrong with the installation disk from handling or other damage or maybe the lens on the drive simply is blurred or quit on you. Sometimes you simply have to try booting up more then once until the options screen finally appears too. Try cleaning the disk and if you have a optical drive cleaning kit use that and try again to see if you get any further.

well even better now... my comp is in a never ending reboot... i think ive messed it up big and i guess i just have to bring it to the shop, thanks for the help PC

Well if you need further help we're always open around here. The cd key is one thing you always want to write down and keep in a safe place until if and when needed.

You can't run Dick Clean Up? Shame.

Did you try to boot in Safe Mode and run a System resore, virus check... etc from there?
