System process slowing my computer down

im wondering what this "System"(image name) is in my Task Manager. well this thing is using a lot of CPU usage. i know i only have 512mb of RAM but i dont really remember it using that much of my CPU before but im not really sure.

Not to sure on this but I think this system thing looks after you PC house keeping, tidying things up.
If you have low memory it may have to work hard swopping data about.

A modern entry level PC seems to have 2 gig minimum so that tell you something.
I only have 1.25 gig, most is in use, I am thinking another gig is in order.
I think you should do the same, if you can afford it, mine will be about
£20, not a lot spread over the years really + you will save time, and time is money!!
 
System and System Idle Process do that, no matter what version of Windows. And the CPU usage you think you see is actually kernel CPU usage, set aside specially. It doesn't use up your CPU, though. I'll guess you're using XP, and you may be running other tasks. Or your computer could be like mine, and the System Idle Process will use up you CPU after coming out of standby with no remedy except to restart every time.

Lets face it the system idle process does nothing, that's why it's called system *idle* there is a big clue there.
Anyone who says kernel CPU usage does not use up your CPU clearly has no idea what they are talking about.
If you are supporting him you have zero credibility.
However it is easy to guess that from your post which contains nothing but abuse.

that's what he's saying it does nothing when you start a program the CPU usage for that goes down as that goes up that's what lucasbytegenius was saying

So I can't make sense out of you post.
Try using specific nouns instead of 'it'. and 'that', so we know what you are talking about.
 
When it says the CPU is idle it means it is available for other tasks, even though it is technically doing something, it is still available.
 
Yes when there's nothing for the CPU to do by the user it still can't just do nothing, it has to do something.

Think of it as your computer just twiddling its virtual thumbs, waiting for something more important to do. The computer's doing something (virtual thumb twiddling), but we wouldn't call that doing anything useful.

That "thumb twiddling" is the System Idle Process.

All CPU usage is shared, if the kernel uses CPU it takes away from the CPU available to your programs. If either of you think otherwise you
have misunderstood how the computer works.

Oh gee. If you look at the System Idle process, you'll notice that on a normal "clean" installation it looks like it's using a lot of CPU, when in reality the CPU is idling.
 
The CPU can never truly be Idle so it occupies its self until there's something to actually do. That's what i've been saying for the past few posts
