i have a compaq laptop computer with a mobile amd athlon xp2600+ processor and when i right click on my computer and go to properties it says 516mhz. but if i do it again right after that it will read at 1.99ghz. can anyone tell me why this happens? does my processor run at different speeds from time to time or what?

Laptops usually have power/temp saving features that automatically throttle the CPU clock so you dont kill the batteries/melt the chassis. You'll only have the full CPU clock when you need it

Yes, AMD calls it Cool 'n' Quiet.......arrrggggghhh I HATE it (on my desktop, not my laptop)
