System question!?!!?

Hi guys, i'm not all that good when it comes to systems and what i need in order to do something, well anyway, here is my question.

i want to play CounterStrike:source, i can play it at the moment but it just crashes and stalls after about a minute, is this my graphics card? do i need to upgrade?

my spec is:

AMD athlon 64x2 5200+ AM2
160gb hard drive
ATI raedon x1200****
2gb 800mhz (x2)

need to know anything else?

**** i'm pretty sure that is a standard one which is why i think my problem lies with the graphics card
 
although your memory is 4GB now

But it won't help much more without a good graphic card...

Crashes how? BSOD, "Program has stopped working", or something else? With an underperforming graphics card you'd most likely get laggy/choppy graphics (low frame rates), but it shouldn't be crashing, that's most likely caused by something else. Although, admittedly your IGP is quite poor and it definitely won't handle any of the new installments of CoD, or really, any current games out there.

As for a new graphics card, what resolution do you play at? If you have a lower resolution (1280x1024 or 1366x768 or something along those lines), any of the above might be fine - however, they're all quite old, I'd be looking at newer 5-series equivalents from ATI. On a bigger monitor, though, unless you're willing to sacrifice the graphics quality and play on a resolution lower than the native res of your monitor, you'll definitely need more juice for something like CoD or other more intensive game.

well when playing it will become very laggy and then it will close the game and take me back to the main menu.

my internet connection is poor because i live in the countryside and cannot get much better, but my old computer did play COD well and it ran smooth aswell as CS:S

i'm just curious as to what my computer would handle in regards to purchasing a new graphics card, i'm willing to spend a bit to get decent results.

Wait, is this in single/multiplayer? By laggy do you mean choppy graphics or laggy gameplay what you would expect with a bad connection?

How much is a bit though? Radeon 5570 will handle both just fine, and only costs about ~AU$100 so in the US it'll be even cheaper (it probably won't max out CoD but it's perfectly playable at decent graphics settings). Radeon 57x0/58x0 will absolutely destroy either game, but they'll be held back your rather outdated CPU. Really, anything more than the 5570/56x0 (or NVidia's equivalents) will be almost useless because no game your CPU is able to handle will be power-hungry enough to require that kind of graphics power.

Of course you'll have to make sure that your motherboard has a full-size PCI-E slot as well.

i don't think my internet connection is a problem as i used to play it with an old computer and it was fine, i do live out in the coutryside so my speed is limited :(
