system restore problems

When I use system restore, I get back a message that says "cannot restore computer to the restore point"

the reason i wanted to use system restore is because sometimes my computer gets slow and freezes and after clearing browser files, history and cookies it still does that. I check the task manager and its all the way at 100%.
So I figured that maybe there is some malware somewhere in my computer. (registry maybe)
have zone alarm pro for firewall, yahoo antivirus, pop up blocker...etc.

I heard that if i do a system restore that is a way of getting rid of some malware without loosing all your info.

The restoring points were when I got the computer about 2 months ago.
As soon as I installed all my software i created restore point... just in case.
but when i tried to restore to that point i got the message "computer can not be restored to that point"

i tried a couple of others after that restore point but the same thing happened.

any suggestions?
Why would a restore point be damaged?

thanx

A restore point can get damaged or corrupted for a number of reasons including; a virus, malware, or shuting the computer down incorrectly. Try getting some good antivirus, (such as AVG (free.grisoft.com/)) that is if you're yahoo antivirus scan doesn't turn up any results and you think you have a virus or malware. The restore points will not work if they're corrupted so you can't use them.

There are other things besides viruses and malwares that can cause system slowdowns. Before you receive the low disk space warning you will often notice things seem to bog down. A large number of things that load along with Windows can drag along. A good registry cleaner comes in handy if you have made a number of software changes over a period of time. The one question here is just what is seen at 100%? The system idle process?

With XP there is never enough restore points made to begin with. If you find something has got on your system you will have to turn off the system restore temporarily to delete the current restore points to see new ones created after the system has been cleaned.

One program that can speed up making new ones goes by the name of SetPoint found at http://www.easydesksoftware.com/down.htm#Point With the shareware there you have a 30day tryout where you can create any number of fresh points at any time. The full version makes one a day at the first startup of Windows. Besides problems with Windows itself if no bugs are found you have to start looking at possible hardware faults.
