Hey I recently had some problems out of nowhere...it gave me an error sometimes that said Windows Explorer HAs Enoucntered An Error And Need To cLose....and so i posted here and was told to do a system restore...When i did a system restore it said ssystem restore incomplete...what do i do now..i dont want to reinstall...and whats wrogn with my system restore

If you have an XP installation disk onhand you can try running the system file checker(sfc /scannow at the Run prompt off of the Start menu) where the system tool there will repair add/or replace any damaged or missing system files found. The disk is needed for the initial file verification process when using the tool. Without having a good restore point to use and if the sfc fails you may have to perform a repair install to correct this. How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

That's one of a few good links for an "install to repair" there due to giving you detailed instructions to follow over some other quicky paragraphs types that can leave a new user hanging. But you would only use this if no other easier solution for repair is found. Additional information on this type of error can be reviewed at one site.

I get messages from people having problems with Windows Explorer crashes on a regular basis. Mostly they go something like this: "When I right-click a file in Windows Explorer, I get a message that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" or "When I try to browse through the folders on my computer, I receive an error message that Windows Explorer needs to close."

In a lot of cases, these errors are caused by 3rd party shell extensions that are not functioning properly" Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors - HelpWithWindows.com
The disk id should help you there if asked for the second disk. The sfc utility will go mainly to the I386 folder when repair/replacement of files is needed.

Where can I buy a recovery disc? The one where it deletes everything and sets it back to like it was when it came out the box

Software - "Windows Cds" hosts several links for different versions of Windows as well as price comparisons between different online vendors. The full install version is the one generally preferred while even the recovery cd version of XP will detect and delete the current partitions on the drive(except Linux cfdisk required there). After a fresh installation of Windows goes on you would still need the drivers/softwares for the system board itself. Those would have to be downloaded from the manufacturer's support site. Shopping.com is one place to browse along with nextag.com, dealtime.com, and a few others. Most vendors carry the retail and oem packages already. These other sites allow you to find the lowest price.

the shell extetion thing worked...but I have like over 200 shell extentions...i turned all the non microsoft ones off....(those are the ones without the microsoft in the company and product name right?)....and it still did it..so the problem is with one of the microsoft ones

u told me to filter out the microsoft ones ...how do u do that...just select the ones with the company and product name microsoft?

With the system file checker and restore points being tried with no results along with reduction and elimination of 3rd party softwares you may have to perform the repair install method to see things running normal again. Recently I lost everything on a main drive when the bios on an older board failed. Since this seems to be a continued problem that would be one way to give you a working installation. The repair method would correct any MS goofs.

what are shell extentions...like i said theres 200+ of them and would turning them all off be a problem? sinc ei dont want to go through every single one

is this pc pre-built by a company, or is it built by urself?
if it is built by a company the u can image restore it.

The problem you are experiencing is usually caused by hard drive problems; if you're still under warranty i would give the manufacturer a call

no, i turned all the microsoft shell extentions off...and the problem went away..so it is one of th emicrosoft shell extentions....but wha tare shell extentions? what do they do? can ne one tell me? wud turning oneoff be a problem?

You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015 explains a possible solution with an edit of the system registry where you would add a new string value there. The description provided by a software vendor gives a good description of what shell extensions are.

"Shell Extensions are in-process COM objects which extends the abilities of Windows operating system. Most shell extensions are automatically installed by the operating system, but there are also many other applications that install additional shell extension components. For example: If you install WinZip on your computer, you'll see a special WinZip menu when you right-click on a Zip file. This menu is created by adding a shell extension to the system."
