Sytem Restore problem

Hi everybody...
I have WinXP SP3 running on my computer. When I click on system restore, it says the following:

"System Restore has been turned off. Do you want to turn on System Restore now."

Please help because I dont know how to do it and I really have to revert back to previous settings.

If system restore is off you can't. What kind of problems are you having? Maybe we can help you sort through it.

I have mcafee antivirus. yesterday it detected a virus and now it shows that it has been removed but when i try system restore, it says it has been disabled. I can not enable it, because i dont know how. I think the previous setting was better.

It's possible you aren't totally clean. Let's run some scans.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

I initially had malware bytes and when I wanted to open it for scanning, it never opened after this virus thing. After reading your last post i removed it, installed a new one, and tried scanning but it does not open. I also downloaded HijackThis and when i run it, it scans for a while and suddenly the window closes by itself. Please help. I even do not have a recovery CD.

Then we need to run combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

I have tried so much but ComboFix download site seems to be broken. are there any other suggestions for combofix download...

You are still infected. Please follow the link from my last post to download combofix and run it.

I am very sorry, I could not download combo fix because I think that due to the virus thing I was unable to connect to websites that were dealing with anti virus. I somehow, downloaded nod 32 anti virus from a non-secure site and after scanning I was unable to boot anymore........ I am using a different PC now.
Thanks anyways for your suggestions as I have learned a lot from them. However, I would be very pleased if you would let me know how you figured out that I was still infected by looking at the HijacThis log.
many thanks..

The is the major one here, but you most likely have other hidden infections.
