Tabbed browsing

when i use safari on mac and i use tabbed browing it can be really slow and sometimes quit. also when i use firefox it has crashed in the past. is it better to have one window open at a time or to use tabbed browsing?

are there any pros and cons for either

Tabbed browsing makes your work easier, but the more tabs you have open the more memory is needed. With 256mb RAM your mac will be slow if you open many tabs.

Yep. I once had lots of firefox tabs open (over 10) and it was getting all slow and stuck. Try having only 2 or 3 at the most tabs open at a time. If you wanted like 6 tabs open at once you could try having 2 windows open with 3 tabs in each but I don't know if this will make it any faster. Try it and see.

I never had problem with firefox, I can open more than 20 tabs, and it doesn't slow my computer at all.

Currently in Opera I have 64 tabs open, IE 7, MSN Live and a bunch of other crap, and this computer isn't slowing down at all with 1GB of RAM. Maybe try adding some more RAM or using some real browsers :P

Thanks

256 is kind of the bare minimum to run OS X

its an old computer. need some more ram for it, it only has a 2gb max. which would be a lot better. need some cash tho.

and thanks for that more tabs more memory i should have thought. i think i'll run with the 3 on 3 if i have loads on the go. thanks guys!!! :D

All of our macs at work have at least 1 gig of ram if not more. Of course they are used for special purposes though like 3D rendering, digital audio, video editing, graphic design, etc.

heck one of the highschools in my school district has a freaking render farm, and all the work stations are dual G5s with 2gig of ram running Maya.

lol, opera for the win.. i also have the little side button on my logitech g5 set to the key combination of "ctrl+shift" just press that and left click a link, new tab, click that and left click on the tab and it closes. it makes my internet use very efficient. right now i have 8 tabs open, ive had as many as 30 up without any issues. go opera!

see thats what i should be having. it barley runs itunes. :D

It also involves the sites you are visiting too. Having a text only page, a flash page, a video stream page, etc.. you get the picture. This could also be one of the reasons too. However, an upgrade (if possible on a mac, I don't know cause I don't use one) of the memory should help out.
