Hey guys,
I just had a quick question for some of you more advanced computer users.
I want to buy my family a decent desktop just to surf the net and what not.

I have been looking at 3 used desktops. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what is the best deal.

$300 For a Compaq presario sr5023wm

$350 for a Custom Built, Specs below
AMD Phenom 8450
Triple core 2.1 GHZ processor
Nvidia geForce 9500GT
1gb video card
500GB Sata Harddrive
Dell 19inch flat screen LCD
1 CD/DVD rom
1 CD/DVD burner with lightscribe
2 USBs in front with microphone and headphone jacks
2 gigs of RAM
Windows 7 os
64 bit


$350 HP a6110n desktop

If you could could lend any insight to which of these would be the best choice please let me know!

Please correct me if I am wrong Compaq is a debranded HP, and If I remember correctly Gateway and HP are one in the same, But out of that the best deal would probably be the Custom computer, and again, if I am not mistaken you may even be able to unlock the Phenom from a triple core to a quad core.

If you are looking at gaming I would say go with the custom, most pre-built computers are not meant for gaming though they will play games, they just dont have the extra power when you really need it.

Gateway and HP are 2 separate companies.
Gateway and Emachines (maybe acer, unsure there) are the same basic company. Either way, the custom build is the best deal. You will have a better oppurtunity to upgrade to keep with the times with it (when the triple core goes outdated, which is years down the road).
 
Upgrade path (what I meant anyway) is the fact that it is probabally a ATX case, thus he could buy any Mobo that he wants to put into that case.

The best way for him to go would be to tell us what he is going to be doing with it and give s a budget and then let us build him a computer.
(heck, if he buys the parts and doesn't want to put it together, then He could let me build it and ship it to him.)
 
The computer will be mostly used for surfing the net and email. Maybe playing some light games online. But mostly just surfing and email. My budget is around $300 all said and done. That's why I thought for that price these computers might not be that bad, considering they all come with monitors and keyboards and the whole bit.
 
So... no gaming at all (unless it is browser based)??

yup, mobo. but then there would be a cpu, otherwise why the mobo. then there would be ddr3. and a powersupply most likely. so mb,cpu,ram. probly ps...not much left.
