what do you think about them?

I think i shouldnt get one till a few more reviews come out. i havent seen much lately,

ALSO there was an expected price drop in 4800 series, but there never was...

does anyone have one?

They supposedly compete with the new GTX275 I thought. Should be a
d@mn good card.

does this mean that you thought there was going to be a drop because the 4850 is now down to like 100-105$ and the 4870 is down to like 145 i think. those are pretty big price drops from 3 months ago
 
according to the ati radeon website, the 4870 and 4890 are pretty much the same:

956 million transistors on 55nm fabrication process
PCI Express 2.0 x16 bus interface
256-bit GDDR5 memory interface
Microsoft® DirectX® 10.1 support
800 stream processing units
etc., etc.,

the reviews do agree that you can overclock a 4890 higher than a 4870, so, there.
that's the only diff.
higher clocks = higher power consumption & more heat.

i've been watching newegg for 4870s, and they have gone down just a bit in the last few months. i bought a saphire 4870 for 199 in Jan, the same card is now 169. i would buy a second 4870, but will totally skip the 4890.

Actually the 4890 has a somewhat reworked core that allows for much better clocks, and it was relased to compete with the Nvidia GTX 275 line of cards.

also, your opinion on 'reliable' is subjective.

it might be a reworked core, but all you get out of it is higher clock speed, it's not supposed to replace the current 4870s or nvidias equivalent, it's simply another option.
