Taking apart an 8800gt.

If i get an aftermarket cooler for my 8800gt, which is unlikely but anyway, is it hard to take off the current cooler? and what are my chances of damaging anything?
how exactly do i properly remove the current cooler?
do i need to put new thermal paste on? haha
thanks :)

im looking at mine and it looks like the heatsink is held on by 4 screws, thats it. you wont break your 8800, its really simple.

haha are you sure? id like to think that i wont break it. but if i do, my life is over. it is my pride and joy haha

and would i have to reapply thermal paste? like say if i just took it off to make sure i could do it... haha

its not hard, i have the accelero revision 2 cooler. if you dont add a fan, it keeps the temps the same as the stock cooler. with a 120mm FAN it keeps them at least 10 degrees cooler, its quite good

ok i just did it...
im not sure if it was a good idea but i put new thermal paste on haha. cpu TP on a gpu.. thats perfectly fine right? i dont see why not. anyway before i did it. with fan speed on auto my temps were:

71
63
55

now after new TP they are

66
58
50

still not good. but certainly better then they were. i am really considering aftermarket cooling now...
although those temps arent too much of a problem.

what cooler would you suggest. im pretty sure where i am you cant get the accellero.
i can get the zalman:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118037

what else would people recommend for pretty cheap?

the zalman looks awesome in my opinion haha.
50 bucks or less is preferable.
also should i get a round cooler like the round zalmans? or the rectangle like the one i linked?

ok after the card is fully warmed up the temps are basically no different.

can i get a reply as to whether or not that cooler, Zalman VF1000 is any good?

also when im removing the old thermal paste, whats the best thing to take it off with?
not as in like alcohol... but like will any cloth be fine?

thanks

but, thermal paste used for CPU's is fine for GPU's too. (again, make sure you dont apply too much! ) anyways as far as I know those Zalman coolers are good, but for aftermarket coolers I've always looked to the NVSilencer series so far (because those blow the hot air out of the case's back right away.) tough, i havnt looked into those for quite a while, so I'm not even sure weither they still are made or not ^.^

you guys are horrible to me haha
ok so if im not running the gpu client the temps are ok.
but apart from wanting cooler temps, the Zalman VF1000 is now just something i want haha.

it looks awesome so i have my heart set on it. :D

i have no money but if i can convince my dad, thats what im planning to get.

shhhhh. it wasnt my fault.

with the microwave, i was actually aiming to create a small scale nuclear explosion, so i see it as rather a big success.

and the phone was actually working after being submerged in milk, its just that it was new years and the service provider was way overloaded.

So... who're you workin for? :D

anyway back to my question.

which i have now forgotten.

i guess you can keep going :)

haha i think im just gonna have to find a way to get myself a zalman vf1000

Have you tried mixing your phone with milk into a cake and then putting it in the microwave for 2 minutes?

That cooler should work very well. It has blue LEDs, so if you don't like the lights, you may want to look into something else.

I use 70% Isopropyl Alcohol applied to a paper towel.
