Taking computer to australia

I have a question. I am moving to australia and was thinking about bringing my desk top with me. I know they different voltage than here in the US. Is it possible to just change out the power supply and put one in that is compatible with there voltage or do oyu basically have to buy a new computer.

I dont know if Australia uses the same voltage as Europe, but if it does there will be a switch on the back of the power supply. You need to set it to the right voltage and then your computer will work. Some newer power supplys dont have switches, and are automaticly regulated.

or you can buy a transformer. i think thats wat you call it. i use one when i go to the philippines since there, the voltage is a lot higher.

you have to get a special pc because in Australia your pc will be upside down
as compaired to being right side up here.

That doesnt make any since

Most likely you would need to set your PSU to 210-230 on the back of it, and a socket adapter. (you can get them at radioshack)

yea that shouldnt be a problem......i think all you have to do is throw a boomerang at the nearest kangaroo and then put another shrimp on the barbie mate :P In all seriousness, you should be able to google the power standards of Australia and see if your psu has the switch on the back that conforms to that standard. If not, I would imagine they do make some sort of converter that runs between your computer and the wall outlet.

You need what Mr.Suave said. But it isn't called a transformer. Its a simple device, you can buy from radioshack or someother place. It is a socket kind of box thing. You can plug US power plug in and then there is a end piece where you plug in the foregin voltage - I don't know what it called.

i think he was talking about that its on the other side of the world, so therefore it would be upside down there.

also, i know what ur talking about....but i can't think of what its called either lordmord.

HA! it is called a transformer!:P
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformer
A transformer is an electrical device that transfers energy from one electrical circuit to another by magnetic coupling without using any moving parts. It is often used to convert between high and low voltages and in impedance transformation.
EDIT:
nvm just realized its the big barell looking thing on those power lines, not the box thing your talking about and im thinking of... but technically there still transformers...
Edit2:
YA i found i was right! http://www.starkelectronic.com/st500.htm its a converter/transformer that converts either 110v(US) to 210v(UK) or 210v to 110v.

Hey, I'm from Australia. The voltage over there is 230V, but 240V is within tolerance.
I didn't know USA had only 120V !!!
I learned something today :D

not strictly true but it in the right ballpark, more like 115 V

Yes it is called a transformer. whoever said it wasn't a transformer was more than likely thinking of a power inverter which is similar but makes the voltage go from low to high.

just so that you know australia uses a mains supplly voltage of 230 volts at 50 Hz. the also have plugs that look like THIS

you have to get a special pc because in Australia your pc will be upside down
as compaired to being right side up here.

dont you guys get lame jokes anymore? lol

although that does matter with graphics drivers that have things like nvrotate lol...... *gets coat*

I thought Australian power supply was @ 240V and if yopur computer runs on average of 115 - 120V then you could just use a converter or such

Anyway what does a US power cord/plug look like?
