.tar arcives - how to extract

I downloaded an .tar archive but don't know how to extract...is there a trick or a program to do this?

tar -xvf [filename.tar]

In MS Windows you can use WinZip, etc.

I find that sometimes the easiest thing to do is to go on to www.google.com and just search 4 it. usually 9/10 u find the answer straight away.
