Up until today, the task bar along the bottom of the screen hd the open tasks represented horizontally along the task bar. Now, the bar is still there, but there is no display of open tasks. How do I bring them back?

What windows version are you using and what toolbars do you have enabled on the taskbar?

vista home, and desktop and qick launch - if i understand your question.

Right-click on the taskbar and unlock it. Then see if you can resize the toolbars, one of them might be covering the whole thing.
