Taskbar and desktop icons missing

I found in another online forum that if i instal SP3.. that it would go away.. i'm going to try that
 
Possibly... except people have had some problems with sp3 installs(maybe it's better now)
I would get hold of a XP setup disk from a friend or local pc repair shop and do what JDBennet said... run sfc /scannow (which I was just about to suggest before he beat me to it :P )
