Taste the sweetness of SSD :P

Hey guys,

came across this some time ago, wanted to post it here, so here I come. It's an SSD series of HDDs from A-DATA. I think it's great news for us all. Give it two years and the prices should go down by a lot. Just think of the possibilities.

A-DATA 128GB SataII SSD disk :

that'd be a very nice portable harddrive. No moving parts and 2.5" form factor :)

Probably comes with a hefty price tag too!

large solid state drive are coming sooner than i expected, i was thinking that it would take another 2-3 years until we saw them in large capacity drives

anyone want to see a 64GB USB pen drive??? it's about the size of a lighter

Yes

I was also expecting them to come later. I know they have existed for a long time but it is only until now that they are starting to become available to the normal consumer and not just businesses and the govt. I think that the future for storage looks very bright. No mechanical problems anymore. I can't wait. I never trusted Disk HDDs.

I'm assuming that Solid State Drive means no moving parts? If so, these should replace the flash drive in a few years if they become widely accepted.

How fast are they though? as fast as the average 2.5in 5400RPM ATA6? I would like one, but if they are slow as hell i dont.

If i compare my portable 2.5in 5400RPM USB2 40GB HDD vs almost any flash drive, my HDD wins. In fact, no flash drive has ever beat my HDD when both are plugged in to USB2. I have tried several flash drives, and they all sputter out at about 8MB/s, whereas my HDD gets about 20. I know there are faster flash drives, but they usually max out at around 4GB.

Ahmmm

Well you are talking about USB2 flashdisks. That's a whole different chapter. The magic in these SSDs is not just the fact that they have no mechanical parts, but most of all their speed, heat generation and power consumption. Mind you they connect through SATA II. I believe that we will see them in laptops first (already exists - Samsung) and then in normal PC use. It's all a matter of time.

The typical access time for a Flash based SSD is about 35 - 100 micro-seconds, whereas that of a rotating disk is around 5,000 - 10,000 micro-seconds. That makes a Flash-based SSD approximately 100 times faster than a rotating disk.

Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
Faster read time – In some cases, twice or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk.
