Lets say you needed to design a system to support a whole city that included internet, phones, tv, radio and all that sort of stuff. how is it possible to go about doing it? and what would be the best way?

basically for now i need to know about internet.
lets say i wasnt interested in buying from an isp and had pretty much unlimited funds. without being stupid. would it be best to involve a satellite or something? i would need to have enough bandwidth to provide however much was needed. what would you have to do to become the company itself that is able to provide an internet service to a small-medium city?

i have no idea how it all works but im thinking raw download speed is necessary. not like good ping for games...
and satellite seems to me to be the best option. it would need to be able to provide internet service and also satellite or normal phone service.

basically, in short, i need your thoughts as to what would be the best way to set up a really good internet service that could do all that sort of stuff, and also would need to be totally secure.

any thoughts? i know this sounds stupid but i really need to know. thankyou :)

satellite is very fast for downloads only. forget games with satellite . requires dial up, dsl or cable for upload. Cable is best then dsl. satellite is very expensive. forget it.

lets say i needed a connection that would serve 50,000 people. how would it be possible to do?

gaming is not important. its the download speed thats necessary.

someone said fibre optics would be best.
how would that work?

satillite sucks let me tell you that(i use it) the ping is unbearable, dialup was almost better if the pictures werent so slow, but i think fiber optic would be the best way of transmitting massive amounts of data, i think coper would be the second alternative

Cable is best. Im guessing but running fiber optics would not do nothing for ya unless your supporting 1000s of people for networking. Cat5 works fine. If you have access to something like comcast your good to go.

yeah up there i mentioned 50,000 people...
at first it wouldnt need to support that many. but in the end around that many people will require bandwidth... not that many at one time... but still worth it to have extra.

where would the fibre optic come from? where does the internet come from?
and on the other end would a room/building full of servers be required or what?

the server will be supplied from the main trunk. Fiber optics is for miles without drop and loss. I suggest you hire techies that specialize in this field.

yes people will be hired who have great knowledge about this. but what i need is to have an understanding of how it works...

according to someone i have been talking to, id first have to find out the source of the backbone at the nearest city and approach them. what i need to know is what exactly happens then?
is there a middle man who you need to pay or what? where exactly does the fibre optic cable run from? basically what is the journey that it takes.

also do you have any rough estimate as to how much this would cost to setup?
like am i looking at more then a million? more then 2 million?

and once the fibre optic cable reaches the destination... what is on that end? how exactly would it be shared to all the houses?

lets say the connection would be free for the user so there was no need to like ration it out... just connect directly to each house that desired it...

i know this is pretty ridiculous to be asking. but i do need to know.

thankyou very much :)

If you get 2-Way Satellite you dont need dial up, dsl or cable like you said it just goes back the same way it came in but yes, uploads still suck and it is expensive. I wouldnt say "forget it" though, still keep it in mind.

but what about before the cable is laid?
need to have something decently fast first. like minimum 100 mbps
absolute minimum.

how would i go about accessing a satellite connection? who would i contact?
i dont mean buy a connection from an ISP... like actually have my own setup as if i was gonna sell internet myself as an isp...
