Television running on the desktop?

What would be required to do this?

What options do I have within those requirements?

And what effect will this have on my system if any?

Thanks for all the wonderful information :] This board rocks.

You're talking about watching TV on your PC? This is easy, all you need is a TV Tuner card.

I personally have the Hauppauge PVR- 350. There are cheaper ones, though..check Newegg.

As for effect on the PC, it won't have much...the applications that you use to watch TV will take up some space on the hard drive, and it will use some CPU/RAM power while running, but thats about it.

Thank you very much.

I noticed some monitors come with a TV tuner option. Would that be necessary to watch television through the PC? If not, how would it be any more convenient?

A monitor with a built in TV tuner doesn't use the computer, it allows the monitor to be used as a standalone television. IMO, a TV Tuner card in the computer is better, because you can record and pause live TV, whereas you cannot do that with a monitor that has a built in TV tuner.

I think I just ran into some bad news.

Theoretically running a dual monitor system, dedicating one monitor widely to television itself with DVI input only... Well, television tuners don't have DVI output options, do they?

Doesn't work like that...what would happen is the TV tuner goes into your PCI port (unless you get USB, but those are usually crap). Then, when you want to watch TV, you open an application on your computer to watch it. Right now I have it in the bottom right hand corner of my computer screen. If you wanted to watch TV with dual screens, devoting a second monitor to TV, all you do is drag the TV application over to the second monitor. No monitors plug into your TV tuner, unless you get a monitor with a built in tv tuner.

That makes perfect sense. And you're free! hehe. I mean, I think I have everything I need now. I'm out of questions.

Thank you for your kindness.
