Tell me about Opengl and Direct 8

My little nephew is now old enough to play games on the computer. I have three older Nascar Track games on CD that his father played at my house.

I know the games worked on my older PCs but they don't work under my XP computer. The system is a 3.0 with 1 g ram
The games load but it seems the graphics are the problem. The games look for a opengl or direct8 monitor setting.
The game seems to find the correct settings either 1024x786 or the like or the 800x600 setting and loads ready to play but the game fails at the last moment and the screen goes blank.
When I hit, control-alt-delete the says the game STOPPed running.

I have ordered a newer PC based Road Rally Car game but it has not arrived yet.

Any ideas on what I can fix or download so my 5 years old can play the games his father did?

the games did work on this XP computer five years ago when my 10 year old neice wanted to race on the Nascar track.
But now they don't and the graphic card and the monitor are still the same as before.
What else can I do?

Have you got the latest updates for the games and the latest drivers for your video card. What about updating directX? Have you got SP3 installed?

Hmmm.......if the game worked 5 years ago and everything is the same then it should work...

Did you maybe change something in the graphics driver settings in the meantime?

Also older games might need to run in COMPATIBILITY mode for older Windows. So you can try that too.

Also did you maybe change your drivers in the meantime?

Did you maybe update your PC with the latest updates lately?

There is no reason why it wouldn't work if you did not change anything.
The only explanation I can come up to is that you did something on your computer which caused this.

You can also try to reinstall drivers if you want in the case if the newer ones caused this.

Try all this and let us know!

No SP3

I don't have Windows SP3 on this PC because I some video editing software that will not run under service pack 3.

But, when the Nascar games checked the video modes it seems to go back thru DOS instead of windows. The game did that before bit now as it checks the video it takes about 20 minutes to complete.

I get a prompt saying everything checks out and you are ready to start the game, thats when the game stalls without starting.

I tried the camp view and the game advanced three steps into the startup but stopped running at the click to begin the race.

So it did help, some.

May it be updates, windows, avg flash player??

The only thing I can think of is I changed the monitor to a flat panel last year, but I don't play games, it was only for my little ones.
