Temp with NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT

Hey guys,

Got a question for you, I have heard that the NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT has problems with temp control, first off, true or false? My GPU is usually running at 60 C . I heard that these can hold up to 100 C (true or false?). I turned up my fan manually just to cool it down to see how it would react. Right now i have the fan set at 90% and at idle the temp is a nice 45 C. If i put the fan on auto, it lowers the fan to 30% and the temp will go up to 60 C. The fan will kick in when playing games, but i was just scared i might be harming the card.

What do you guys think i should do? Keep my fan close to 100% all the time or rearrange my fans? (Can send pics of my rig if you need it). Let me know what you think, thanks guys.

The cooler you can keep the NVIDIA chip the better. The issue is generally that the solder connection fractures from heat stress, causing the graphics to fail. Try using an external usb cooling system.

Hey everyone,

So i was able to get the temp of my card down in temps. I re-arranged my fan directions (i am going to add more larger ones tomorrow. I think it actually might be my case that keeps it so hot.

I have also seen that if my card fan is on auto, the fan will not turn up until high temps. Can this be changed? or is this a problem with all NVIDIA cards?

Thank you guys for all your help,

Mike, I have the same card my friend, it gets so hot that the vid card will artifact only after about 3 hrs of gaming time. I am only playing Starcraft 2. I even took off the stock vga cover, this lowered the temp as we'll and extended my gaming time, however it would still artifact after about 3 hrs. I used Riva Tuner to set max fan speed (100%) everytime I boot my computer. To be honest I have really had enough I am looking to purchase another video card, hopefully this one doesn't reach 2 million degree's. GL with yours though :P

Cool dude. Ya right now i am manually turning it up. It keeps at a good temp of 35C. The problem is i don't want to have to manually do this every time and i don't want to burn out my fan by leaving it on 100%. Hopefully i can find out a way to turn down the temp that the fan will kick in. Any help would be nice.

Mike I was thinking about getting an aftermarket cooling system for the 8800 at one time, have you thought about this?

To be honest dude, no. LoL. My system is nothing really spectacular and should have no problem keeping my card at a decent 45C(seems to be a good temp). Instead it reaches temps up to 70 - 75C. Which according to NVIDIA is fine, apparently these cards can run up to 100C. I just think this is rediculous temp.

Whenever i do turn up my fan, even it its only to 50%, it keeps my card at a decent 45C. There should be a way to change the auto detection on these cards to do what i do manually.

Now yes i could go out and spend money on an additional cooler, but if this is just a NVIDIA problem, maybe i should change brands. Hate saying that because i am more then happy with this card. But ya, i have not concidered an aftermarket cooling because if i come to that point, ill just buy a different card that runs better.

Right now just want to know if it is all possible at changing the fan detection temps. If not, ill be shopping for a new card (Seeing as i am going to be doing a new build this fall, prob wait till then lol).

What did you think of your 8800GT anyway? you like it? how did it compare to other cards you have had?

Mike,

I really enjoy the card. It runs great when it is not overheating. Right now I have my PC connected to my 55" LED tv and I play Starcraft 2 on it. The graphics are amazing. If I could get it to stay cool I would be very happy. However after all the heat problems I have been hearing about this card / brand I will choose something different. I haven't used ATI in a while so I might try them out. Also look into riva-tuner maybe you can have the fan on the gpu do what you want. Its what I use.

Hey dude,

First off, that's awesome to hear about the 8800GT, i think the same. This card is amazing, other than the heat issue. Now i do have riva-tuner right now. I am just lost to know where to go into it to change these settings. I didn't even know this was possible. Is there any directions i can follow to set this up?

Just to make sure we are on the same page, this riva-tuner can change when the fan will kick in and can set not only the temps but the % of which the fan will run?

Thanks for your help man.

I also have the same card, using it for physx. Just make sure you have good ventilation in your case and set the fan to 100% using ntune when gaming. I have never had any artifacts or issues.

cool. ya i was just wondering if there was a way to change the auto settings to accomidate for this. Don't really like the fact that i have to go in there manually to change the speed of my fan.

could get evga precision , card doesn't have to be evga and still works normally, and simple interface, and if it don't work no harm done.

or MSI Afterburner.

If the card's running hot I'd recommend you take it apart, clean out the heatsink and fan of dust, and replace the thermal paste.

Holy shit dude, totally didn't think of this. That will help a lot seeing as it's 4 years old. I am also picking up 2x120mm fans today. Can't believe i didnt think of cleaning the stupid thing, feel like a dumbass.

Definitely clean it from dust. Also change the thermal paste because for a four years old card it needs to be changed. You will see improvements. :)

Haven't changed thermo paste yet. Ill have to actually figure out how to do that lol. I added a 120mm input fan and a 120 mm exhaust fan as well as blow out all dust (there was a fair mount). Seems to be working ok. I'll have to research on how to replace that thermo paste (the right way of coarse) and do that up.

Thank you guys so much, any more opinions are welcome.

glad i read this, might be part of the reason why my cpu has seemed pretty slow lately, other than the fact that it's over 10 years old and a 32-bit cpu, athlon-xp 2400+ @2ghz, has never gotten thermal paste, completely stock.

It's very simple but you need to do it right otherwise you can have problems.

Firstly you need replcement paste and a cleaning solution. I use Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and ArctiClean solution (works better than isopropyl for thick pastes)

Might have something to do with it :P

You should probably reformat the machine too.

that's been done multiple times over the years, i keep it fairly well clear of virusses registry errors and other crap, don't download a ton of b.s. off random places, but probably does need to be done at some point soon, too bad the os is on a 20gb drive from like 2000 so it's so slow, i h8 ide cables/ribbons, and it's got a 60gb for everything else on the same cable. on top of i being an oem so the mobo sucks, but my apex vortex 3620 case probably helps it some so it has good airflow in the case, but now you know one of the reasons why i want to build a nice comp.
