Temperature monitor/display?

What is going to be better a program that tells me the temp or an actual 5.25 display of my cpu? Also what other hardware do/should I monitor besides my cpu? Harddrive, video card, memory? North/south bridge? Also if you recommend an actual display that has a temperature sensor that I would have to put on the cpu is that going to just tell me the temperature of the whole thing or each individual core and what would be better each core or the whole thing? Thank you for your time and comments/advice in advance.

Generally, you'll want to monitor:

Processor (temperature sensor on the motherboard)
Core (1-4) (temperature sensor on the processor itself, for Intel Core processors)
"Motherboard" or "System" (usually your north bridge)
GPU
and HDD

Also, the best program to monitor your processor depends which CPU you have.
