temporary files

i dont know if im talking total crap here, but i heard that temporary files are saved in a folder and clearing them can help speed up your computer

IF this is true, can someone tell me how?

if not , and/or if this is in the worng thread ,my apologies!

It's under the General Software heading so you are safe there! :P

Whenever you try a freeware/ shareware, or simply install software off of a disk temporary folders are created by Windows. After the installation is complete and even after programs are removed you get stuck with leftover files and folders usually buried deep in the DocumentsandSettings sub directories under your user name. Most are totally worthless and seem to tie up drive space good for other things since they simply sit there doing "nothing" but that.

One freeware designed to find and remove them can reclaim some drive space back for you. Just be careful it doesn't go after anything you have saved in folders you created on your own. CCleaner or what many call "crap cleaner" is free at http://www.ccleaner.com/

You can use Disk Cleanup (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup) to clear temporary files.

Right-click on your C:\ drive in My Computer, and click on Disk Cleanup. This will give you a menu to delete your unnecesary files, including the temp files. I am not sure how much of a performance boost this will be though.

boing! boing! boing! Something is bouncing around the room here lately! :P The freeware at the link there also has a ffree registy cleaner built into it. Getting rid of some crap in the reg can often help to speed things up a little.
