Terribly agravating problem!

Hi, recently and unexpectedly when I'm on the internet the little hour glass blinks on and off next to my pointer. also after being on the computer for a few minutes if i try to open a program it says it can't due to insufficient system resources! I have a p4 2.8 800mhz 512mb I would think I had enough to run more than one instance of IE! I am certain this is some software / malware doings. If anyone could give advice it would be much appreciated! thanks
