Text Service for Windows?

There a free text program out there you can install on windows to send texts to phones? I don't own a cell but there are times when I need to get hold of a friend immediately and texting is the only way to do it.

I found a free site for it called www.textem.net but it doesn't offer a program I could install on my PC. Others require I have a actual service to use for my texting which I don't have.

Any advice on what could help?

When I had a 3G Dongle with a sim card, I could send texts from my computer using my credit from the dongle, and people could text me as well, but not call (as it's just a dongle and not a phone)

Might be worth getting a pay as you go phone and just using it for texting. Though a lot of them now give you unlimited everything for like $60/m.

Nah I have better things to spend $60 on and I really don't use a cell. I got a $15 a month burner for emergency use as I camp and fish a lot. Interesting part is I have so many extra minutes now that the cell can no longer show me the number after 4 years :P

I just need the ability to text for a few people for when I need to get a hold of them immediately, which mainly happens when I am at home.

Nothing wrong but I just prefer not having to leave a browser up. I like lazy and automatic loging :P
I recently discovered textem.net and it seems to work fine. They send email notices when messages have been sent to you. So, if you use an email client (Outlook, Windows Live Mail, etc.), you will get those notices without keeping your browser open. However, I don't know why are concerned about keeping your browse open.
