The Average Spending?

So typically, every four years or so we replace our desktops. How much do you usually pay for your new build on average?

Please be particular about whether you are a gamer or not! As that makes a big difference how much is typically spent on a system. =)

Every four years, yeah right!

More like every 6-12 months.

No kidding...I have never had a machine for more than 6 months before I go new again..usually 4 month rotations.

I typically do a complete rebuild every 4 years. I wont be rebuilding for a LONG time to come now though. I spend typically $1000/yr on it.

I like to keep my personal computers about four years before I upgrade as well. I spent around $550 on my last upgrade.

I'd probably spend around $400-$800 for the initial build and then add about $500 in upgrades over a period of time.

i go for 2 years per a build. Then a complete new SOB, and my comp becomes the family comp.

Its been around 2 years since I got my first decent computer.
Before that I had a half decent laptop.

During the last 2 years I have upgraded every part of the system except for the dvd drive. But thats not working well so it will be replaced soon. The cpu, gpu, ram and motherboard has been upgraded twice during that time.

I don't do full upgrades, I just always have stuff in mind like "Next I think I'm gonna need is another 2Gb of ram" or "as soon as I find some money I'll get a new mobo"

well i built my first computer back in march...ish, and im bout to replace the mobo, video card, ram, additional hard drive and power supply in it this winter... Maybe get a new processor but i think my q6600 will last awhile... soo thats....10 months or so... and ill be spending prolly $1200. gonna sell my old shit probably

and yes...im a gamer

I'm 16 so i spend around 500-750 on my initial PC... plus i like show... so i'd spend like 130 on just like lighting... and cool add ons... but i spend an extra 250 on upgrades... so yeah i spend alot of my money on my PC singly...

I'm just glad I don't have to depend on a computer to earn a living. For me it's always been a hobby but the fact is they are still very unreliable. I have had 3 computers and parts will fail shortly after the warranty expires. And it's always parts that i'm told that should not fail. Last time it was a memory stick. The only good thing is the price of computers has gotten cheaper.

I've had the emachines im using now for about 4 years. It is at THEE bottom of the barrel. It's always being pushed to its limits it just depends on if you know how to manage your stuff and make sure your cpu isn't always running at 100% even when your not doing much, just stuff like that you gotta watch out for.

Decent quality computers that are not overclocked should be able to last at least 5 years. I bought a computer in August of 2003 that lasted me four years.

Processors now scale back their clock speed when they are idling which can also increase their lifespan.

well i built mine nearl 9 mo. ago, 360 :D. Now I am upgrading, but not a complete rebuild. Im going bit by bit, like i sell the old parts i had in my PC, get a little money else where, and now I getting a new video card, and adding 2gigs of ram.

My guess it is what you can afford, because it sure isn't about what you need.

For many applications, I would guess 2 to 4 years would work. For gaming rig, there is always something new or better coming out.

Replacing every 4 months is great if you have a) the money, b) the time and c) its about having the newest and best. I suspect that what you get is going to be incrementally better, but not exponentially better.

So, its up to the whim of the beholder. I go about 3 years myself.

It's been about 6 months since I built the one I have now. I have a Coolermaster 690 Nvidia edition and a BFG GTX 260 OC edition in the mail! I am always looking for new parts...when ever their is a deal I will upgrade.
