The basics to a good gaming desktop ?

I have a HP laptop right now and can not play any games on it at all,
The lag is pretty bad ! It's only use is for internet browsing and the other basics. So I am planning to buy a desktop next month.

My problem is I do not know what to look for in terms of it being able to run games smoothly. I keep seeing the words ghz,ram,gigs etc...
And I do not know anything about those words or what they are.
I also might not be able to get one that meets the standard requirements so i've been hoping I could upgrade the "key parts".
I know I can upgrade a graphics card. But what about the other stuff like Ghz ?

To sum this up.
What features should I look for when shopping for a desktop capable of playing games smoothly ? And which ever features they are, Are those parts upgradable ? I am not looking to spend thousands, Just buy a middle of the line desktop at the local computer store and hopefully be able to upgrade a few parts so that it will do what I want.

Sorry if this sounds really amateur but I am very illiterate in this field.
 
Firstly we'll need to know what your budget is and what resolution you'll be gaming at (this will be determined largely by the size of your monitor). It would also be helpful to know what games you intend to play.

You'll save money and be bale to buy better parts if you put it all together yourself, rather than get something pre-built. It really is very easy.

Oh and "Ghz" just refers to the clock speed of the processor.

I was thinking around $700 - $1000 but I could go higher, the only game I play is Red Orchestra Ostfront... Which is not top of the line graphics at all. But I am buying a new computer for Red Orchestra heroes of Stalingrad which will be out this year. Which again,is not going to be top of the line graphics from what I can tell, But still a step up from the first series. They have not released the requirements yet though unfortunately. And I usually use 1024x768 for resolution on my current laptop (17 inch screen)...

But you're not going to be able to game on your laptop screen, so what size monitor did you have in mind?
 
So that should be 1680 x 1050, which won't put huge amounts of stress on the GPU. I would consider a GTX 460 or the ATI equivalent. You would then need to decide whether to go AMD or Intel for the platform.

If you were prepared to wait a few weeks, there will be some new chip architectures about, which should push down the price of current kit.

Yeah I don't need it right away so I could definitely wait,
Thanks for referring the GTX 460, Searched it up and it looks great.
Just going to look into intel and AMD online now and see the options
