Well, I have a Seagate 40 GB hdd Model#: ST90801U2RK Part #:9Y1682-542 that apperas to have crashed. I contacted the Seagate Technical Support and I had about a fifteen minute talk with them, and I was told that my $100 drive needed to be replaced. But I am not quite ready to give up the battle. Anyone who, can help, please do.

If there is a free way to get data off a drive the MS Windows cannot detect, or read, PLEASE tell me how!

**Some things things that are happening:
Drive shows up as "24" instead of it's normal "SEA_DISC" label.
The drive starts spinning, but nothing happens on the PC.

Download Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/). Burn the iso to a cd and boot it. There are several tools on there that can see your data, assuming your disk is not damaged, and copy it to another system.

Get it burned and booted and we'll help you from there.

Sorry, didn't know you had Knoppix. I don't usually tell users to download the 700MB when the 50MB DSL has most of the common tools.

I've heard the freezing technique has some good success.

Good Luck!
