i JUST purchased a new computer today - pretty excited =) however i do plan on using it online, not a great deal but enough to be cautious nonetheless. it comes with 30 day mcafae trial ( YAY.) which is know is total BS. im wondering if it is worth investing in an antivirus? i do not want my $2000 computer going down the crapper because i didnt spend an extra $50 on anti virus. you guys know more than i would - is it worth my buying antivirus? or is there Free antivirus that is good enough that it will make a difference?

your toughts/suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance.

Use avast. It's free, and it's what the big companies that you have to pay for (i.e. Mcafee, Norton) use to test their products. Fast reliable, automatically updates and what's more, it's FREE! All you have to do is register, then renew urself every year :)

I have microsoft security essentials on all my computers along with malwarebytes which i run about every 2-3 weeks just to check, never had a problem

AV Comparatives is an independent and non-profit organization based in Austria that tests and reports on AV products. Their test are very comprehensive and include such things as effectiveness of blocking infection, effectiveness of removing viruses from infected machines, impact on system performance and speed, etc. It's a good comparison tool if they've tested the program you're considering.
