OK: iTunes is what you want! it rips CDs keeps all your songs very organized and will get all the track names from the CD data base. I would use ACC(Mp4) it is a much better compressor than Mp3, use constant bit rate(not variable). for ACC don't use a bit rate any lower than 128kbps preferably 192kbps and for Mp3 don't use any lower than 160kbps preferably 224kbps.

and if you want to copy the 5.1 DVD audio from a DVD video you need a DVD ripper(I use AOA DVD Ripper) to copy the write protected files to your hard drive, then you will need a program to separate the audio from the video(NOTE: this is a perfect copy which has no quality loss! it just separates the audio and video files) you will be left with an MPEG video file(.mpv) and an ac3 5.1 Chanel audio file (.ac3). which can be done with this software :D

i personaly use Audiograbber and Easy CD-DA Extractor, i have no problems, they are just what i need

lol . wma is about half the size of an mp3

they're the same size, i'm comparing right now the 128 kbps WMA file and 128kbps MP3 file, there is maybe 100KB +- difference

i knew that but compared it just to be sure :)

becuz of different quality, one song can be around 200KB large or should i say small (the quality is very low-8kbps) or 50MB large (best quality-wav or audio cd)

EDIT: you can't just say mp3's are larger or smaller then wma, it's all about quality, just like pictures :D

personally, i dont notice any difference

well of course, u can notice it if the bitrate is under 128, but if it's 128 and more up to 320 kbps then u can't notice it, but it's waste of space cuz the 128 kbps is just perfect

.flac! By far flac is the best. I use EAC and FLAC for all my ripping needs. Nothing bettter than losless audio!

does your mp3 player identify that format, or you just don't use mp3 player

.flac is an option.

i was thinking about ripping all my favorite tunes in .flac/acc/wav/ogg lossless, or other lossless format.. (CKY/HIM/KMFDM/NIN/Korn all must be lossless :)), and then rip the remaining 10,000 or so songs into a smaller format, like mp3 320k or ogg..

What formats does iTunes support? I think you can get plug-ins for some..

Personally if i was going to do that and HDD space wasn't an issue i would use .wv, as this will work with wirtually every media player, unlike aac which is just apple stuff, wma microsoft also wav is basically the quality that the CD is, so you don't lose quality and get the most compatability :P, Although i would put AAC as a close second as imo it offers excellent quality sound

itunes supports mp3, wav, aac, apple lossless and it can play wma, i think it probably has support for more that list is only of the top of my head, i am not on my own compuer at the moment :(

AAC works with Real-One and Nero and maybe a few others.

Thank you SO much for your advice, I am almost ready to construct my musical beast.. My buddy is selling me two $200 gig hard drives for cheap, but this is the sound card i'm going to be using.. Holiday, what are your thoughts on an E-MU?

looks good, just make sure you get one with Dolby digital out :)

first off it's ACC not AAC, and second off ACC works with Real-One and Nero and maybe a few others.

lol, it is called AAC and not ACC, AAC= advanced audio codec
see this screenshot :P ( it is called AAC) look carefuly :D

however i want to say that wma audio sounds better than mp3 at 60-92 kbps, but mp3 sounds better at 128kbps and up, so wma is not good audio codec because i don't think that anyone here rip a song from cd for a bitrate less than 192kbps, and AAC is better compression than mp3, it gives higher quality than mp3 at any bitrate high or low.

and sorry for my bad english ;)
