ok....what do you plan on doing with it? It is way cheaper to build, so I suggest it.

Optical Drive/s
Hard Drive/s
Power supply
Memory
Processor
Motherboard
Graphics Card(if gaming, if not=get onboard graphics)
Fans
Case
aftermarket CPU cooler(if doing rough task or overclocking)
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse/Trackball(I use trackball and I love them)

I reckon that is it

If you're overly worried about cooling you might want to get some better thermal grease then what comes with the CPU cooler. You can get a tube of Arctic Silver 5 for $10. You also might want to get some zip ties or twisty ties to keep the wires away from the fans.

Wow, you're buliding a CPU? It's going to be hard to compete with Intel and AMD... :P Sorry it's just that I don't like people mis-using tech words.
Anyway, you'll also need an operating system to make it work, like Windows, if you don't already have one

So Im looking at
-Intel core 2 duo 1.86 Ghz
-Corsair 2GB RAM
-Western Digital 320 GB hard drive
-power supply ???
-cooling system ???
-Motherboard ???
-Case
-Sound Card ???
-Video Card ???

any suggestions as to what i should get

Heehee, I know what you mean. For some reason, old people always refer to the entire computer as the "hard drive", and it makes me cringe every time.

Alright, if you want opinions on what you need, let us know a couple things. I take it that you didn't read the forum sticky or else you would have already listed then ;)
1) Price, what do you want to spend on this
2) What are you going to be using this for? Web surfing and music? Gaming? Solitare and microsoft office?
After that you'll get a better response :)
