The future after PCIe?

The future is never set! But one article regarding ATI after the AMD buy out points at the possible and even eventual use of external boxes to handle graphics for the home pc. The brief article and some replies can be seen at http://www.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?AID=140721
Since PCI-E cards initially saw 75w drawn from the power source and increased with many of the newer models since. The concept of external rather then internal cards offers a way to see a means of providing more power for video while lightening the load on the internal supply inside a system. The external type would have it's own power source.

While considering that they probably haven't got plans for the the external graphics controllers set out yet, probably at least a good 3-4 years before pci-e starts becoming obsolete, however, the next thing may just be to make a faster pci-e slot. It's very hard to tell with the way technology moves, but it's probably safe to say that pci-e will have a strong foothold for quite a while.

I don't like it. Isn't technology supposed to get smaller? I like small gadgets, I don't want a bulky box outside of my machine.

well its all a matter of opinion for me i don't really care if I have a computer that takes up my whole room jsut as long as its fast
That's both! When you've been in the technology field long enough you can plainly see how fast things move. Gee? It wasn't that long ago I was running an IBM 386 then AST 486 and then... egads the time goes by fast!
How about four PCI-E 64x cards?

PCIe will last until they can no longer add more lanes/make them faster then a faster interface will be developed. PCI lasted a fairly long time, PCIe will probably last even longer.

The main problem that will have to be solved is having more video cards in sync while seeing larger vpus on them! That includes video cards with multiple vpus as well for dual vga outputs. An external box may sound a little awkwards but having multiple monitors connected to external output means far less space taken internally as well as a much cooler system. Your SLI or Crossfire setup could have a powerhouse supply for driving the external cards.
