This is a little note I wrote to myself a few years ago.
Sustainability within technology
Upon seing a sticker asking RBC to stop funding tar sands and dirty oil, and being stocked about my new portable HDD, I thought that our society is progressively doing a move towards the Internet. Whether it is cloud computing, Internet TV, streaming media online. Wireless internet allows access to a variety of devices, from smartphones, to laptops, PDA portable media players and even video game consoles.
My idea is as such. Every OS would have a virtual store where one can purchase software such as games, utilities, and other software. If every OS has a fully structured "App store" software, manufacturers could save lots of money on transportation cost and what not.
You would have to create an account on the virtual store similar to Apple's Apple ID. from there you can find a record of all your downloads. In the event that your system dies or you get a new one you can just log on to the App store and redownload your software. From the same App store you would have access to tech support and software updates. This would be done on a large scale for it to be effective and sustainable.
