The iPhone - makes me laugh

So I was reading slashdot like I normally do every morning when I'm at work and came across a post from yesterday (sunday) morning. The post basically said that the iPhone does not sync with any 64-bit OS. The person who discovered this and posted this said that the rep from the Apple Support line actually told him he "needed to downgrade [his] computer from a 64-bit operating system." That made me laugh when I saw it. Even more humorous than that is reading the apple support forum that was posted along with this post.

Some of these people on the forums are so CRAZY. Seems a major problem with the release of the iPhone is the activation. Luckily, one helpful person who works for ATT made a thread explaining why it was taking people so long to activate their phone. Basically it's like a line of people waiting to walk through a turnstile. Only 1 person can go through at a time, so everyone behind has to wait. (The activation goes through a switch which cannot activate all these new phones at the same time, no wonder there's a wait.) So reading this thread some people are just ridiculous. They are so furious with the fact that they have to wait. I finally got to this 1 response and I had to come here and share it.

Take a deep breath folks, life it too short to get so upset about something that is really not all that much of an issue. I mean we have people dying in wars, dying due to famine and disease, we have enough world hatred to go around, we have problems with pollution, crime and violence. Is the iPhone issue really all that important? It at least is temporary and has a solution.

He nailed it right there, so true. Seems people are upset that ATT didn't upgrade their hardware for the thousands upon thousands of people who want to activate their phone RIGHT THIS SECOND - they cannot wait, their lives depend on it. Do people really expect ATT to upgrade their hardware and switches for a 1-time event? After a week it'll be back to normal, if not sooner.

Chill out people, youre freakin out over something that's not a big deal. So you don't have your phone for a little while, what did you do before you had a cell phone? What did people do before the invention of the phone? It's ridiculous how much people depend on technology nowadays. And if they don't have it they just want to take a bottle of sleeping pills after chugging a bottle of Jack. Get over it people, you'll have your phone back in a day or 2.

Although the IPHONE Does look Appealing, Whats the price tag on it again?

Although thats not very good on apples Behalf having too DownGrade your Pc and have to wait 1 at a time for activation...
 
I think its $600+ USD. I don't understand why it doesn't work 64-bit. You'd think that would be something they would work on, especially since in a few years 64-bit will be standard IMO. All these first-gen iPhones will be useless.

As far as the 1 person activation at a time. I don't know if it's 1 person per switch or if a few can do it at a time, regardless, it's not the 1.5 million iPhones they sold in the first day or whatever. I'm sure in areas such as NYC it's more than 1 person at a time, as they (according to that thread) have heavy-duty switches which I'm sure can handle more than 1 person at a time. But generally speaking it's like a turnstile. Only so many people can go through at once.
 
Well there ya go. Personally I'd probably buy the 8gb for the extra 100 bucks. If youre spending 500, why not spend 600 and get double the amount of space? Anyone here have an iPhone yet?

it will take longer for 64bit to become the standard, a lot longer than you think. Once everyone who is spending lots of money is on a 64bit platform then it will become the standard.
 
i would buy it for 600 if it works with my carrier :) for now theres no unlocked version so we'll see. I can live with my current phone. It does everything the iphone does except no touch screen.

Wait, wait, wait...The new version of OSX Leopard will be 64bit and only 64bit. Will it be backwards compatible? Or will it just work because OSX is from Apple, and so will the iPhone...

Maybe they'll have to update software?

Well IMO its sooner than you think. I don't mean it will be the standard in 2010... but by 2015? Who knows... I was using that just to make a point, I didn't literally mean it WILL BE THE STANDARD IN A FEW YEARS!!! heh... point is... it doesn't run on 64-bit, and that technology is out... may not be the standard but its in use. And IMO technology such as the iPhone better well damn work with 64-bit. Apple isn't made up of a bunch of idiots, they know what they are doing. I don't understand why though... why it doesn't work on a 64-bit platform. Just doesn't make sense to me. It would make sense if in a few years a phone that runs on 64-bit doesnt run on 32-bit, but why not the other way?

there are tons of businesses that still run on windows NT, thats NT 4.0, netware 5, etc. There is always legacy support because it costs so much money to upgrade. 2015 maybe, but it really depends on how cheap the technology gets.

I mean if software licenses weren't so freaking expensive everyone would always upgrade.
 
$50 a month for 2 years, $36 activation and then like $40 extra for unlimited messages a month, so to get it activated with the normal price plan its $1236
 
Wow, that's expensive as hell... I won't be getting one anytime soon. Not to mention in with Verizon and have a really good plan, I don't even wanna switch carriers.
 
I am all for the iPhone, but I am shocked at how expensive they made the plans. I mean they are a bit better for me since I am an existing Cingular customer, but still its very expensive.

I can't get unlimited text messaging a month unless I pay $40.

Cingular is either $5 or $10 with a normal phone. But it is way more expensive with the iPhone. And I guess you can't really compare how much you pay for texting on your iPhone with Verizon, because you guys don't have one.
 
a few things to consider

if you have unlimited data, then why even use SMS? Use ichat, jabber talk, google chat, whatever to send messages and then you no longer have to worry about SMS. There is even a mobile version of gmail, which has google chat built in.

The plans IMO are retarded for cingular/ATT with the iphone. I am with tmobile and have stayed with them because of my plan. For about 50 dollars every month (after all the hidden fees and taxes, its 50, my plan starts at 30/month) I get unlimited text, 750 anytime minutes, unlimited night and weekends, unlimited pic messages, and for I think 10 dollars more I can add unlimited data through their online service, but I would never really use it.

I like how I can add a feature with tmobile for about 2 to 5 dollars extra each month. I want unlimited text? 2 per month, unlimited nights and weekends 5/month so on and so forth. That makes sense because you pick your base plan then pick and choose what other features you want.
