You really think they are doing this to turn a profit? Advertising my friend. This thread right here is why nvidia does things like this. Publicity is what makes companies like nvidia run. They create this, and every computer website runs an article on it, then there is the countless forum threads about the articles, and people get to talking about it, and how crazy it is, and the whole time it is nvidia in the spotlight, and not ati.
