The Lucas' Macintosh LC III needs a new HD-but can he use a non-Apple HD?

Title says all- I have a Apple Macintosh LC III (made in 1993 for those who are like "Wha?!"), and the SCSI HD went boom. Now, I have a few scuzzies sitting around, and I wonder if I can save myself $40 and use one of those. The original HD was a 40 MB "monster", and there are 1 GB Apple HDs for that interface, and I think that back in those days you had to use the Apple HDs because of the firmware. So, my questions are, how do I terminate/configure the boggling SCSI HD to get it to work with my elderly low end Mac? Will it even work at all? Is there a guide someone can link to?

For those who are asking "Why the heck would you want to fix up a 17 yr old 25 MHz computer?", it's because I like fixing up the old ones and maxing them out. It's a fun hobby, and I learn a lot.

Well, basically I need to know how to configure SCSI into a Mac compatible configuration, using the jumpers. After some research, I found out the LC III uses SCSI 2. Anybody been around long enough to know how to configure this? I have limited internet time, so if everybody would look for helpful articles and post the links here, that would be great.
