My PC is deafening. I cant sleep when its backing up a 100 gb XPS laptop two floors down. I dont know if it is all 6 15K drives working together to get my files, My CPU burning through the heatsink, all 10 million case fans, or what. ITS DRIVING ME INSANE!!!!

I think I will get:
a silent cpu heatsink
hard drive silencers
load up on silent fans
get optical drive silencers
get passive cooling for my graphics card

And,on a different tone, my friend has a dilemma. 2 gigs of XMS memory, or 4 gigs of Valueselect. What should he get for his desktop?

The way i look at it - Quality over Quantity. If he has a motherboard that supports dual channel configuration, the 2 GB XMS will outperform the 4GB ValueSelect hands down.

You might want to look at these fan-less near-noiseless power supplies:

Also, even though it may make only a few decibels difference, you may want to consider sound padding for the inside of your case.

(I don't know if you want water-cooling so you don't have the noise of any fans.)

jst get a thinker plated case
i already buildet a 2,5mm stainless steel server like case for out home "server"
aka (network name) data dumb.
due to the case.. its actually pretty silent... but also very heavy

anyhow.. put a bit of foam in the case next to the HDD's. that absorbs a bit of the vibration's.

Give it a good blast with compressed air. It might dislodge dust and stuff that can cause components to overheat.

2.5 mm steel?? Are you trying to make it bullet-proof ? That's gotta weight about 40 pounds (18 kg for you metric people )

Depends on the eviroment Open the case up and look. If it doesn't look the same the first time as you built it then its time to get the air canisters.
