The PSU+GPU+HP?

Hi. I am new to this forum. I have an HP A1250N computer AX2+3800. The current PSU is 300w 12v. I also have a ATI x700pro 256mb GPU. I want to upgrade to an EVGA 8600GTS 256mb GPU, but it req. a higher watt PSU. I tried a antec NEO psu with modular cables and the computer wouldn't boot. It would boot when I replaced the factory PSU. I took my OZC 700w psu from another computer and it booted in the A1250N. I wonder if it didnt work becasue of the modular cables. I just wanted to know if using the OZCpsu would adversly affect my computer over time with the high wattage in the HP computer? Also is the 8600gts a good upgrade to an ati700pro? And are there any other PSU's that would work if anyone has this same computer and been thought my situation. Thanks for any help with this.
 
Any PSU should work, though you probably want one with 400W or more. What type of Antec PSU was it? I also had a Neopower 650 that didn't work. Strange.

The 8600GTS is not much good for gaming, but okay for everything else. 8800GT or ATI 3850/70 are better choices.
 
I think the Antec was a neopower 650. When I called HP they said I would have to send the pc in to get a better power supply from them, but I know this is false information. They just want to charge me an arm and a leg for it. I know the 8600gts isnt the best out there, but I am just trying to bring this computer more up to date. My wife plays The Sims 2 and on the x700pro and it is slow play. I play Guild wars and I have been noticing some graphic lagg recently and artifacts. Im not lookin to pay $300+ to play fear at 50fps on this computer. On reviews for the 8600gts people say the get Call of duty 2 maxed out ,and COD4 almost maxed so i would be happy with that. When I told the HP tech about the 700w psu he said something about not putting to much wattage into the computer, but everything I have read about psu's has said that wouldn't matter.
anyone know if upgrading the gpu would help in sims2 or is that a procesosr based game?
 
Yea this computer has been a pain in the ***. I learned my lesson with buying branded pcs. I will build from now on! I think im just gonna slap the OZC 700w psu into the hp case and save a little money there. It was going into a computer I'm building but I don't have the money to finish it. So, I will part it out for now until i can afford to finish it. I can't find anything online that says a 700w psu will hurt any computer even if its a crappy HP. It fits in the hole a little snug but i think that will be ok. It will add a large 140mm fan to the case instead of the current psu's dinky little fan. This computer doesnt even support ddr2 just ddr ,so sad. I wish I had the $1000 to finish my build project but ohhhhhhh wellllll. Thanks for the help though. I really wanted to replace the mobo on this computer and bring it up to date with ddr2 and sli etc..., but hp said it wouldnt work. They said I wouldnt be able to access windows from the hard drive if i replace the mobo. I didnt want to chance it since I don't have a real windows cd I just have the hp recovery disks.
