The resolution war

Hey guys I am sure this has been asked (couldn't find it though) so I thought id ask. I also did some google searches but almost every thread was mixed.

I am a mid entry gamer...I don't require a ungodly monitor and maxed out Crysis but currently my old LCD died and I am looking to upgrade. CRT generates WAY to much heat too :P

I wanna make sure most games support the resolution as well. Mind you I only upgrade once a year on GPU or so...so it has be able to last me as well.

My thoughts are these

1440x900 vs 1680 x 1050

Due to me being mid level what would be the better resolution to play with?
This is based off my 8800GT.
In a few months I will pick up a GTX 285 once the price drops some more.

If you can give me game settings examples that would work too.

Thanks.

I would go with the 1680x1050. I run an overclocked 8800GT on my 22", and I get about 40 fps with high settings and full screen on Crysis. Of course, no AA though. All my other games are maxed at 60 fps. If you're going to upgrade to a GTX 285, the high resolution shouldn't be a problem at all.

I am a pretty big computer guy, not only games, but I spend alot of time in front of the screen doing homework and other such activities as I am a computer forensics major in college.

I notice the smallest drop in resolution, I run a 24'' samsung @ 1920x1200 and anything lower is noticeable to me.

I would go with the biggest monitor that you can afford, if you are going to upgrade gfx card soon you may as well.

Well, i have a 22' monitor and it is at 1650/1050, and as you can see my rig isnt nearly as good as yours, and i play all my games at that resolution, although w/ crysis everything is on low and mainstream. But Even so, 1440/900 still looks fantastic on my monitor, very clear!

But go for the biggest and best you can buy!

Pshh, go for the 30" addiction! 2560X1600!!!

j/k.

24" or a 22" will do fine. Remember though, if you go dual, you can't go back.

I would go for the 22" in my sig. It's a very cheap 22" and you can always lower the sharpness of a monitor but you can't increase it. So if you are set on both monitors as being 19", I would go for the sharper one because you would be able to get both resolutions on it.

Well to give you guys a rough idea....a 15 inch LCD @ 1024x768 is what I use to use and I was happy. I am using a 19 inch CRT right now at 1024x768.

Is 3 inches really worth the extra $50? I don't want a "omg my eyes are bleeding" size. Just because the commercial says I need a 50 inch TV doesn't mean I actually do :)

I am just looking for a bigger screen/resolution that will fit a mid-level gamer with a resolution that wont require me to constantly upgrade my video card every 6 months to play a game on medium/high settings.

Go as high as you can, 'cuase you can always use the highest resolution when in the desktop for more space, and use it for games for as long as you can, and when you find it struggling (which I can't see happening with a GTX260) just turn it down. ;)

Well I don't care about a "huge" desktop space. It wont effect my buying...It can be 1024x768 and 1440x900 gaming and I would be never caring :)

I also hear you get crappy results running a monitor under native is this true?

Both monitors I am looking at are $120 each so its not a win/lose for me. I am going to go look at some 19 and 22 inch LCD at Best Buy today to see if I like bigger or not.

Being as I am on such a low resolution now either one will be a HUGE upgrade to my eyes.

But the original 2 19inch are currently my choices. If I like 22 more then 19 then I will wait and continue this convo on which 22 I want in 6 months :)

Well I might be getting a 1440x900 today for 40 bucks so I think I will see how it goes. If I like it...maybe later I will buy a 22/24 inch and higher resolution.

For 40 bucks its not a real loss ^-^

Yeah... Resolution. Can't get enough of the stuff. I had a 1280x1024 17" for ages, and was fine with it... but then I moved up to 1680x1050 on my 22" Widescreen, which was awesome. But now I've got 1920x1200 on my 24", which is just kickass both for gaming and regular use.

Interface might also affect performance. This is partly a question, haha. I had a 17" 1440x900 VGA and I upgraded to a 22" 1680x1050 DVI and I actually saw an increase in performance. Games like Crysis actually improved by 5-10 fps.

holy crap...I traded 2 CRT monitors and 30 bucks for a 19 inch 1440x900 and its freaking huge ~_~

I am gonna be just happy with this. For the price the monitor was STILL boxed.

This is actually about 6 months old off craigslist :)

Sent a email to the guy was "do you take trade" he said yeah I need 2 CRT monitors.

I have 4 in the garage so traded that + 30 bucks and bam. Now to get rid of the last 2.
